Notification of Loss of Japanese Nationality

If Japanese citizen acquired a foreign nationality at own will or a dual (or more) nationality holder chooses a non-Japanese nationality, she/he needs to submit Notification of loss of nationality (Kokuseki soshitsu todoke) before the due date.

 

Deadline

Within 3 months from the day the person lost Japanese nationality

 

Who can submit the documents?

The person who lost Japanese nationality, spouse or relative within the fourth degree of relationship

 

Where to submit?

Directly or by mail to the Embassy of Japan in Finland or the public office of the person’s legal domicile in Japan (Honsekichi)

 

Required Documents


1. Notification of loss of nationality  2pcs *Sample

2. The document certifying loss of Japanese nationality 2pcs(original 1 pc, copy 1 pc)
e.g.「Extract from the population register」must show the date of acquisition of foreign nationality

3. Japanese translation of document 2 (free format, 2 pcs) The notifier may make a translation.
Please write the name, street address and telephone number of the translator in the end of the translation.
 

4. An explanation of delay (free format, 2 pcs)
If the registration was not submitted within the deadline.
 

5. A statement about the name (2 pcs) * Only if there are different names on document 1 and document 2
 

Notes

1. Please write 「国籍を喪失した人の氏名」"the name of the person who lost his or her nationality" exactly as it is shown on the family register (Koseki Tohon).
 

2. If you acquired a foreign nationality at your own will, the date of acquisition of foreign nationality should be the date of loss. In addition, when a dual citizen chooses a foreign nationality, the date of loss shall be the date on which the person is recognized as having been chosen under the laws and regulations of the foreign country.
 

3. In the case of minors, even if they acquired a foreign nationality through the application by their parents, who are their legal representatives, it will be regarded as the acquisition of foreign nationality at their own will.
 

4. If you have a valid Japanese passport, you have to return the passport with 「除籍謄本又は除籍抄本」”a copy of the expulsion or an extract of the expulsion” after the fact of loss of nationality is stated on the family register, or return the passport with 「旅券失効願」“Request for passport revocation”.
 

5. If you apply for and are issued Japanese passport despite of loss of your Japanese nationality, you will be subject to the crime of Misrepresentation of passport by false statements in the application documents (Article 157, Paragraph 2 of the Penal Code).
